Alegria Alegria series / n287

$47.00

On the first night they approach
and steal a flower
from our garden.
And we say nothing.
On the second night, no longer hide:
trample the flowers,
kill our dog,
and we say nothing.
Until one day,
the most fragile of them
enter alone and our house,
rob us the moon,
and knowing our fear,
pulls the voice out of our throat.
And because we said nothing,
We can no longer say anything.

Eduardo Alves da Costa
'On the path with Mayakovski'.

Alegria, Alegria is an analogy for Brazilian music of the Tropicalia Movement. It was a song that spoke of freedom and joy of being living, but mainly was a critique against the military regime that was in power and censored violently the citizens in all its forms of expression, including artistic freedom, at that time in Brazil. The composer and musician used some metaphors to criticize, between lines, the dictators. He was the one of those who were exiled in London by the military government. But, despite of all the nonsense things that happened at that time in Brazil, the art, the music and the joy of the Brazilian folks resisted.
